Occupation: Medical Doctor – Family, Maternity, and International Medicine



Ryan Gallagher is a Medical Doctor doing full scope family practice.  He graduated from Brentwood College School in 2003 where he was a member of the lightweight rowing team and involved in student government.  From there he went on to pursue a Life Sciences Honors degree at Queen’s University.  Ryan then returned to his home province of Alberta to study medicine at the University of Alberta, where he graduated in 2011.  He completed his Family Medicine residency training in Victoria.  Since then he has practiced in office, hospital, surgical assist, ER, maternity, and international medicine.  He has worked throughout BC, in the Northwest territories, and abroad in Vanuatu and Cambodia.  He continues to be involved in the College of Family Physicians of Canada and has become involved in a local initiative to help connect health care professionals.  Ryan is very excited about sharing his experiences with Brentwood students and answering questions about a diverse and exciting career in healthcare.


Talk Synopsis:

Presentation Title:   A Career in Medicine; The Journey There and the Adventures Along the Way!

During this interactive talk Ryan will talk about what a medical career, and more specifically family medicine, is like today.  We’ll explore the journey starting in high school through to practicing medicine and talk about the challenges along the way. As well he’ll discuss how the diversity of healthcare career options, not only including medicine, allows for opportunities to pursue your interests.   There’s lots of fun to be had along the way to establishing a career and Ryan will talk about international medicine and working/traveling as a locum physician. Make sure to bring your questions!
